WHY MANUKA HONEY?

There are at least 300 types of honey available in the United States. But Manuka honey is the most unique and sought after honey of them all. And, while available in the U.S. and elsewhere, it’s only produced by bees in New Zealand.

Authentic Manuka honey is harvested from hives dedicated to bees that gather nectar from the flower of the Manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium), a plant native only to New Zealand, and make it into the most expensive honey in the world.

The unique characteristics of Manuka honey have been well defined over the years by Professor Peter Molan (University of Waikato, NZ) and others. And its use in medical applications has now been extensively documented in various reports and studies.

So, how does Manuka honey differ from other honey? Most all types of honey contain some level of peroxide, the strength of which is sometimes referred to as peroxide activity (PA). Because of honey’s peroxide content and its low pH and high osmolarity, due to its heavy sugar content, honey has been used since ancient times for various applications.

However, the PA of honey is usually short-lived and not now considered to be of little value.

MANUKA HONEY IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER HONEY

While Manuka honey does contain peroxide, it’s the non-peroxide elements not found in other honeys – specifically methylglyoxal (MG) and dihydroxyacetone (DHA) – that’s what makes it so valued. No other honey contains these elements in the significant strength found in Manuka honey. It’s the non-peroxide activity (NPA) created by those unique elements contained only in Manuka honey that defines it.

Some have referred to medical-grade Manuka honey as active Leptospermum honey (ALH), but, no matter what it’s called, it must come from the hives of bees dedicated to the Manuka bush in New Zealand to provide the product used in wound care dressings.

Manuka Fill®
Sterile honey wound dressing

Manuka Fill is Leptospermum scoparium Manuka honey from New Zealand.

Our Manuka honey is fine filtered, rigorously tested and sterilized, making it appropriate for application to most wounds. Available in 1.5oz and 0.5oz tubes. Manuka Fill helps maintain a moist healing environment conducive to improving wound healing.

The high sugar levels of Manuka Fill result in osmotic pressure which helps promote autolytic debridement of necrotic tissue and rapid reduction in wound malodor.

Manuka Fill is ideal for use in deep cavity wounds. It can also be used as a top up for Manuka IG Max and Manuka FoamAir, as the exudate dilutes the dressings honey.
